Braemar and the Duff Highlanders

17 SEPTEMBER 2026

BRIAN AND DOREEN WOOD

Brian Wood got the 2026-27 talks off to a wonderful start with a well researched presentation of the reforming of the Duff Highlanders. Setting the historical context of the Highland clans and the associated Games, he explained that the Duff Highlanders were largely made up of men from Braemar with the name derived from the family name of the Dukes of Fife. Up until the late 1930s they would march at the Braemar Gathering. After they were disbanded they did not march again until 2025. The speaker had been closely involved with others in re-establishing the Duff Highlanders, and he set out how funds were raised and arms and costumes created. Today the Highlanders march at Highland Games as well as performing at other events. We were shown the tartan that had been made in a kilt brought by the speaker.
